10 REASONS TO GO TO TAHITI NOW
Tahiti is so hot right now. Literally. And we wouldn’t be able to understand if it wasn’t on your destination wish-list before the end of the year. Obviously the perfect excuse to relax and be pampered, French Polynesia is also home to many exciting festivals and events that you shouldn’t miss. Check out what’s hot in the diary from now until December.
Billabong Pro Tahiti - August 12 to 24, 2016 Come and join the best surfers in the world in this year’s championship tour in the beautiful village of Teahupoʻo. Founded in 1999, Billabong Pro is known as one of the world’s heaviest big wave competitions.
Super Aito Va'a - 26th edition - August 20, 2016 Watch the top 100 rowers qualified from July’s race in the ultimate va’a (canoe boat) competition.
Tahiti Nui Tour - August 24-28, 2016 Tahiti hosts the Pacific equivalent to the Tour de France so do not fear if you have missed the European one – the Tahiti Nui Tour promises to be just as entertaining! Other Pacific countries are expected to take part including Chili, New Zealand, Australia and New Caledonia. Ride on!
Polynesia Festival - Tahiti (Papeete) - September 12-17, 2016 The very first Polynesia Festival, organised by Tahiti’s Maison de la Culture (aka. Te fare Tahiti Nui), promises to be a voyage into Polynesian culture. As its name suggests, the much-awaited event will showcase all things Polynesian through traditional dance workshops, a fashion show, native language classes a music concert, a suspicious ‘Myths & Legends’ night and lots more. We’re excited!
World Tourism Day - September 26, 2016 The people of Tahiti take part in the annual United Nations’ World Tourism Day, celebrated by a number of other countries globally. The day is a public holiday in French Polynesia and is aimed at building awareness of tourism along with its economic, cultural and political values. Tourists are evidently invited to join locals in enjoying a series of events and activities highlighting the country’s dance, music and culture.
World Petanque Championship – End of Octber, 2016 You will see that visiting Tahiti feels like being on an exotic version of the French Riviera. Some towns’ architecture and the general ambiance is similar to that on the Cote d’Azur. And the World Petanque Championship is likely to have the same effect. Worldwide delegations are invited to partake in the contest at the big boulodrome of Toata, in Papeete.
Hawaiki Nui Va'a – 24th edition – November 2-4, 2016 Come see the best teams in French Polynesia as they paddle at sprinting speed in the Hawaiki Nui 80-mile canoe race. Starting on Huahine and ending three days later in Bora Bora, with stops in Raiatea and Taha’a in between, this significant event for locals is well worth visiting for. Don’t forget to contact your specialist at Tahiti Travel Connection to ensure you can stay at one (or more!) of our beautiful selection of hotels.
Hura Tapairu – 12th edition – Week of November 21, 2016 This fabulous dance competition is a true depiction of Polynesian traditions. Tahiti’s Maison de la Culture created Hura Tapairu to give the chance for small dancing groups to compete against each other.
Tiare Tahiti Day – 54th edition – December 2, 2016 This beautiful event is in honour of the nation’s symbolic flower, the tiare Tahiti. As you can probably tell from our lovely Tahiti Travel Connection logo, we are big fans of this event! Papeete transforms itself into a blossoming town and local businesses compete against each other in decorating their shops with flowers.
Raid Apetahi, Raiatea – December 3, 2016 Another tribute to the legendary tiare flower. Both events are taken very seriously by locals due to the flower’s increasing scarcity. This day aims to promote environmental protection which we are all for here at Tahiti Travel Connection. Who would want to spoil anything to do with French Polynesia’s stunning natural environment?
So pick up your phone and get chatting to your Tahiti Travel Connection specialist who will be delighted to assist in organising an impeccable and complete experience around any of these sporty, legendary and floral events!
