Rimatara
Description

Did You Know?

Charming and authentic, the island of Rimatara is an off the beaten track paradise and is located 665km south east of the island of Tahiti.
Life on this island has retained its authenticity with the Tahitian values of simplicity of life ever present. The locals don’t see many tourists and so when you arrive you are welcomed as part of the family and you will be sure to have an authentic experience like no other island can offer.

Rimatara is only 9kmsq with only 700 or so inhabitants who mainly live from agricultural farming and the preparation and weaving of pandanus. The island’s size makes it easy to explore on foot and along the way you find hidden coves with gorgeous lagoon waters, fruit trees in abundance, deep caves, chickens galore and even the odd pig roaming around!

Rimatara is also home to the endangered Perruche Rouge - red parrot. Having been hunted for centuries for their magnificent coloured feathers, the Perruche Rouge are now only found on this island. Thanks to a protective law put in place by an ancient Queen of Rimatara, and also given the island's relative isolation, the birds have survived in this little lost paradise. Still classified as being in danger of extinction, a relocation and breeding program is in place with the island of Atiu in the Cook Islands. When in Rimatara you will recognise the birds by their shrill whistle and you can spot them feeding on the abundance of fruit in the forest trees.

This truly is an authentic island not to be missed!
