Fatu Hiva
Description

Did You Know?

About 1400km from Tahiti you will find the remote island of Fatu Hiva.
Fatu Hiva is an island of extremes. Cut off from the world, it is accessible only by boat and it is the wettest, the lushest, the most remote and the most untouched island in the Marquesas.

It’s also a centre of Marquesan crafts. As you walk through the small village of Omoa, you’ll see women hammering mulberry, banyan or breadfruit bark on logs. They dry it and then paint ancient Marquesan designs on their famous Tapa cloth. Fatu Hiva is also well-known for its hand-painted pareos (sarongs) and monoi, a perfumed coconut oil scented with tiare blossoms and sandalwood.

Omoa is linked by one incredibly steep and windy road, to the village of Hanavave. This little village is in the Bay of the Virgins, which is one of the world’s most beautiful bays. The road leading to Hanavave can be tackled in 4WD on horseback or if you are feeling athletic you can make the 16km trip by foot! On this unforgettable hike you’ll have unforgettable views of towering cliffs and majestic waterfalls.

Most of the visitors to this little island come from the Aranui cargo and passenger ship which makes a stop to deliver essential supplies to the villagers.
